Election action
Saturday, 5 February 2005
Tomorrow are the Thai general election that have prompted a most amusing amount of poster action around Bangkok. We can't read the writing but we been keeping oursleves amused in the traffic jams by making up our own stories.
Our favourite party is party number 1 (Each party must have a number on the voting slip). We don't know the actual name of it but the leader of the party seems to be some kind of hardline nutter. Look at this poster of him wielding a sledge hammer and looking angry. Catherine thinks he's saying "If I had a hammer....", I think he's saying "Vote for me or I'll twat ya!". His secondary posters feature his rather unimpressive chin and beard.
As demonstrated in this photo, the other candidates are rather more conventional in their poster styles. Although, this man does look like he's about to take over the world with some kind of evil master plan and this other guy looks like he represents the Crazy Troll Magic Mushroom Party. Check that surreal backdrop!
Actually, as far as I know the current prime minister, who posters are most relaxed and smug, is easily going to win. I wish I could show you the difference but have not managed to photograph his poster yet. He did however use his presidential power to have a huge rally for his party right in the middle of Bangkok last night.
Also, in a shocking and extremely upsetting way, from 6pm tonight it was impossible to buy booze in Thailand. They seem to have shut down booze sales for the duration of the election. Tut tut. Bad show. We can't vote....why punish us? Weep Weep.
Up at 6.30am to go to Cambodge for some gun fighting, landmines and spider eating. Will report back. Maybe.
